Dear GNKS Families,

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫ਼ਤਹਿ

On behalf of Guru Nanak Khalsa School, including all the administration and teacher sewadars, it is our pleasure to welcome our GNKS families to the new school year which will commence remotely on September 13, 2020. Please note that the remote format will continue until we receive clearance from the State of California.

Though we will begin this year remotely, we remain committed to providing our students with quality education and a strong link with our Sikh Faith. Please be assured that there is a large team working countless hours ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed in this new environment, however this will not happen without your assistance, dedication and support. This is a unique situation that we are facing and in order for it to be successful, we would love to work with you as a team to ensure accountability, enthusiasm, learning and results.

This communication will outline: registration, material logistics, the new format, timings, graduation, and your role in your child’s learning.

Registration

You will be receiving registration forms by mail in the coming weeks. Please follow all directions on the form and register your child before the specified due date.

Books

Upon registering, you will receive your books 1-2 weeks before the first day of School. We are currently working on logistics and will keep you informed once details have been finalized.

First Day Of School

The first day of School will include introductions and a school-wide video presentation which will inform parents of how we propose to teach this year.

Graduation Ceremony

The team is working on how graduation will take place and final details will be released after August 30, 2020.

Start TIme Change:

As lessons will be remote while COVID19 restrictions are in effect, there will be no commute. It has been suggested that School start earlier so that families can spend more time together on Sundays. We are proposing two time choices:

 a)    9.30 a.m. - 11 a.m.                            b) 10 a.m.- 11.30 a.m.

Please complete and submit this survey with your preference by Saturday, August 15, 2020. We will confirm the finalized time once results from the survey are in.

On-Line School Format

Although students will be receiving physical books, lessons will be taught digitally. Please note that attendance will count for a portion of the student’s final grade.

Your child will receive their lesson on their digital device. They will be expected to watch a 10 minute video independently & answer a short online quiz before class on Sunday. (A portion of the final grade will be allocated towards quiz completion). In addition, there will be an online class via ZOOM for teaching Punjabi, Gurmat and Gurbani.

Online Class Duration:

  • Level 1: 60 minutes
  • Levels 2-8: 60-90 minutes (subject to length of the lesson).

Format:

Assembly: Initially each class will do their own assembly/Ardas before the start of class. We will try to do a school-wide assembly a few weeks after school starts.

Subject Allocation:

The class time will be split in 3 sections:

  • Punjabi - 30-45 minutes; The class will be run via Zoom by your child’s teacher.
  • Gurmat - 15-25 minutes through Zoom instruction; and
  • Gurbani - 15-20 minutes through Zoom instruction.

We will try to run the school in a format similar to in-person Khalsa School, so your child will still have tests, receive quizzes and homework assignments which are expected to be completed over four days in a week. Parents of younger children will need to sit with their child to maximize learning.

Your Role In Your Child’s Remote Education at GNKS

During the next few weeks, our teachers will be training and educating themselves on new learning platforms, digital teaching methods, preparing videos/quizzes and finding creative ways to most efficiently use technology to make this the best experience for your child in these challenging circumstances.

However, as you are aware, this format has its limitations as your child’s teacher will not be physically by their side, nor will your child have their classmates in the same room. Just like you used to bring your child to Gurdwara and to GNKS, you will need to continue to encourage your child to attend classes on time, to make homework part of his/her weekly routine, so that they will be excited about coming to Khalsa School.

There will be a video lesson posted prior to class for your child to watch. The lesson will have a short online quiz that they will need to complete before attending class. The quizzes will be graded. Parents of younger children will need to watch the video with their child and help them with getting to the weekly quiz so they can work independently on them. Students in upper grades should be able to watch & complete the quizzes independently.

Learning & Teaching Support

Please rest assured that we have a team of support staff who will help you and your children during this transition. We are all working together to ensure that this unique chapter is a success.

The support we have so far are as follows:

  • The Baalvardi Team will support on-line teaching and Level 1 & 2 teachers (there will be no Baalvardi while the school is teaching remotely, however materials can be made available to any parents who request).
  • Ameeta Tiwana Ji will still be in charge of Level 3-4 children.
  • Arshinderpal Ji will be in charge of Levels 5-6-7-8.
  • Mrs. Kuldip Pahwa will still take attendance.
